Maria Newman
Clinical Associate
About MariaSome of the hardest seasons of life happen within our closest relationships: when someone we love gets sick, when caring for them starts to cost us ourselves, when we lose them, or when a partnership we built our lives around falls apart. I help people make sense of those seasons, grieve what has been lost, and find their way forward.
I see adults, couples, and families in person in Beverly Hills and online throughout California.
Maria’s Expertise
-
From the shock of diagnosis through treatment, survivorship, and fear of recurrence, support for patients and the people who love them.
-
For people caring for a partner, parent, or child with a health condition, including burnout, resentment, anticipatory grief, and the strain caregiving puts on a relationship.
-
Using Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), I help partners reconnect and rebuild trust. I work with romantically partnered couples as well as caregiver dyads.
-
For couples who want to navigate divorce gracefully, and for individuals grieving a breakup, divorce or a relationship pattern they keep repeating.
-
For adults, children, and families after the death of a loved one, including anticipatory grief, loss after a long illness, sudden or complicated loss, and grief that doesn't follow the timeline others expect.
My therapeutic approach
I believe the things we struggle with were, at one point, sophisticated adaptations to our realities. Many of our patterns come from early lessons, often unspoken, about what is safe, what we deserve, and what happens when we need someone. We carry those lessons in how we feel, not just in what we think.
My work is relational, rooted in psychodynamic therapy, and informed by Internal Family Systems (IFS) and coherence therapy.
With couples, I use Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) to help partners understand the cycle they get stuck in and find their way back to each other.
